OSTEOPATHY

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic form of manual health care that works with the body’s muscular skeletal, neurological and fluidic systems to help balance structure and improve function. As Osteopaths we are concerned with looking at root causes of conditions and assess the person as whole not just at the painful area.

We treat a variety of complaints including:

  • Joint pain - such as back, neck, shoulder, hip and knees

  • Arthritis

  • Cramps, muscle spasms and circulatory problems

  • Neuralgia

  • Headaches resulting from neck pain (known as ‘cervicogenic’) and migrane prevention

  • Sciatica

  • Tension, stress and inability to relax

What Is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a form of bodywork that uses very gentle light touch to asses and treat tensions and restrictions within the muscular-skeletal, fascial, fluid and nervous systems. The primary focus of the treatment is often the head, spinal column and pelvis as the crainal-sacral system is interconnected by boney joint articulations, bathed in cerebrospinal fluid and then incased by membranes. So if you fall and land on your bottom, because of these anatomical connections, you may experience a headache without even directly hitting your head! As the body works in relation to all its parts and systems, shoulders, arms and legs may also be treated with this approach.

I often use this light touch to help identify areas of the body where a person may be holding emotional stress and tension for example in the jaw or chest. This can help you to become more self aware of how you hold yourself and we can then work out ways to manage your stress. Sometimes our bodies physically hold on to past trauma (physical or emotional) in a way that we are not always conscious of. I work specifically with this (I also lecture in this subject) and can create a safe and supportive container should anything like this arise during the session.

The treatment is usually relaxing and calming. Due to its gentle application, cranial osteopathy is also suitable for babies, children and for those that can’t tolerate a more direct approach due to illness, sensitivity or just personal preference. This type of treatment can also be preformed whilst the patient is wearing light clothing. I have written more about working with cranial osteopathy Here.

What To Expect

At the first consultation a confidential full case history is taken looking at your physical, medical and lifestyle history. Questions may be asked about your past and current emotional wellbeing.

A physical examination is carried out at each appointment. This involves observation of standing posture and active and passive joint movements. A cranial assessment is undertaken with the patient laying down whilst the practitioner palpates (feels) for tensions around the head, spine or pelvis.

Note: You may be asked to remove outer layers of clothing for examination and treatment so please wear appropriate undergarments or bring shorts or leggings to wear.

If relevant to the complaint, orthopaedic or neurological tests may be carried out.

Based on the examination findings and the case history, I will discuss with you your diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan, giving you an idea of how many sessions I think you might need. I can also contact your GP or help find other allied heathcare professionals should you need this.

I may use a combination of direct structural treatments including, soft tissue massage, neuro-muscular technique, joint articulation and mobilisation as well as cranial osteopathic techniques (find out more about this approach below) The choice of technique is entirely dependant on the patient, the presenting complaint and of course personal choice. Different bodies respond differently to different approaches so my aim to to tailor the treatment plan specifically to each person.

“I have been treated by Jo for over 10 years now. Back, shoulder and recurring neck issues, all improved following regular sessions with Jo. I now go every 6 weeks for maintenance sessions to keep me mobile and pain free.
I look forward to my appointments and always feel rejuvenated and relaxed afterwards.
I have encouraged many friends to see her as well as my husband and mum in law who at 91 is still active and independent thanks to Jo's regular input.
Would not hesitate to recommend Jo to anyone of any age.” - J.P

I started running recently and unfortunately pushed myself too hard, injuring my knee. Jo was absolutely fantastic! She quickly identified the issue and provided the right treatment to not only relieve the pain but also help me get back on track with my training. Thanks to her expertise, I'm back to running stronger than before! I'd highly recommend her to anyone in need of an excellent osteopath.” - C.C
